"I had a rough time—a really rough time—in school," she recalls. "It's almost as if you can't be human because they think that by you being in a bad mood or getting upset about anything that you are just trying to be a diva ... you can never just have a bad day like everyone else."


After finishing eighth grade in 2003, Hayden Panettiere has traveled to South Africa to film the movie Racing Stripes. When filming was completed, Panettiere decided not to return to school in New York and instead completed her first year of high school with a tutor when they travel to South Africa. "It was certainly opened my eyes, see the slums," she recalls. "It makes you appreciate what you have, but at the same time you admire how simple life is: in other places." In Over the next year Panettiere played a recurring role on the Fox series Malcolm in the Middle (2003-2005) while also appearing in movies Raising Helen (2004) and Disney's Ice Princess (2004).

Heroes soon proved very popular, reintroducing Panettiere in the spotlight of the media, no longer as an adorable child, but as an incredibly beautiful young woman.
